Calorie Gallery - 3 Food Facts for Children

1) The NHS says that a child of 10-years old needs around 2,000 calories (kcal) a day to meet their energy needs. 

2) Our bodies burn energy from two different food types. The first is carbohydrates which is food made up of atoms of carbon and hydrogen. The second source is fat.

3) Sugars are processed in our gut for fast release energy. Fats are processed in our livers and provide longer term sources of energy. It’s important to have a balance.

The World of Energy programme is a 1-day primary school STEM workshop for children in Years 5 or 6.

‘Calorie Gallery’ is the fourth activity in the day where the children in teams of 5 to 6 explore the energy stored in different types of food, how much energy our bodies need each day, and other benefits such as vitamins, minerals and fibre for a balanced diet.
